The most anticipated match of Saturday night’s ‘Supershow’ in Stockholm has hit a snag. The bout between Martin Svensson and Niklas Bäckström is close to being called off as Svensson hasn’t come close to hitting the featherweight mark, and the bout looks like it just might not happen. “Martin came and weighed 71 kg and says he can not do the weight to 65.8 so it is 5.2 kg (over)” posts Bäckström on Facebook just moments ago about the ongoing discussions about the overweight Svensson.
Svensson who is known for his huge weight cuts, was way off the mark for this one. Svensson (10 wins & 3 losses) lost his last bout against new champion Robert Whiteford, but had still won 5 out of 6, and was set for a huge Swede-versus-Swede showdown with Bäckström (5 wins & 0 losses & 1 draw). The HILTI Stockholm fighter has signed an exclusive agreement with the Danish promotion Royal Arena beginning 2013, so this seems he will have to wait for their next card. Unfortunate for the Vision promotion that was looking to make a statement with its first card in Stockholm.
In other news, Swede Andreas Stahl is left without an opponent and his match has been pulled out from the card.
MMA Viking will wait for official word from the promotion. The 5kg discrepancy is not a small one. Updates will be posted.
