MMA Viking finishes its “Meet the Fighter” series with Jason Young. He faces American Eric Wisely on the prelim card of the UFC in Sweden. Let’s learn more about the UK fighter looking for his first win in the Octagon.
Jason “Shotgun” Young (8-5 Overall, 0-2 in UFC), England
Englishman Jason Young comes to Stockholm with one thing in mind: he must win.
This is his third shot in the UFC and after losing his previous two fights, it’s obvious that this time his job in the promotion is on the line. Despite dropping decisions in his first two UFC fights, Young performed well on both times. In his UFC debut he did well on the feet against featherweight title contender Dustin Poirier but got taken down too many times from the clinch. In the second UFC bout Young found success on the feet against the Japanese judo specialist Michihiro Omigawa but was again taken down repeatedly and controlled on the ground by Omigawa.
Before getting signed by the UFC he fought mainly in the UK circuit. Young started his professional fighting career in 2006 and fought his first five fights in the former Cage Rage promotion, winning four out of five bouts. Young got his UFC deal by beating UK veteran Abdul Mohamed, Lithuanian WEC vet Sergei Grecicho and lastly Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Jorge Britto in April of 2011.
In the UK Young trains at the Team Titan but he also visit’s Paul Daley’s Semtex gym. He has been also spending time in Florida where he works out at the American Top Team with Brad Pickett, Mike Brown and other ATT fighters.
Young is definitely most dangerous on the feet where his technically sound Muay Thai skills and good footwork are his best qualities. Recent training in the USA has improved his wrestling and ground game a lot but grappling can still be considered as a weakness of his. The young Brit is a game fighter who fights with an aggressive style and always shows up in shape.
