The Octagon will be headed back to Sweden on May 28, and the main event will be Alexander Gustafsson (17-4) versus Glover Teixeira (26-5). MMAFighting.com first came out with the news that the bout is in the works. An announcement is expected on Tuesday in Sweden.
While initial plans were for Copenhagen on the same date, over the last month the plans have changed. Initial whispers came out three weeks ago that the Denmark date was not set, and perhaps the Mauler’s availability and desire to fight played a role in the move of the Octagon to his hometown.
Gustafsson has headlined two events in Stockholm, and most recently the 30,000+ person plus card at the Tele2 Arena in January of 2015, where he lost by TKO over Anthony Johnson.
Teixeira rebounded by a recent win over Jared Cannonier at the recent UFC 208. Prior to this bout, he was demolished by Anthony Johnson in just 13 seconds at UFC 202.
Gustafsson won last September in his lat outing with a solid performance victory over Jan Blachowicz at UFC Fight Night 93.
With May 28th being a Sunday in Sweden, and a Saturday in the USA, it is still left to be decided if this will be a Fight Night at a regular time in the evening or if we may be looking at another very early start time in Stockholm as was done for the last card in order to be a pay-per-view event.
The event is expected to return to the Globen Arena, which hosted the first Nordic UFC in April 14, 2012.
