While Alexander Gustafsson is set for a bout on March 8 against UK’s Jimi Manuwa, Jon Jones plans to defend the title have been pushed back. The anticipated rematach between Gustafsson and Jones was supposed to come together after the two make it through their challengers early in 2014. Recently, the UFC announced that the American champion was set to fight on February’s Super Bowl weekend at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center against Glover Teixeira at UFC 170. However, the timeline for Jones to headline the card was abruptly cancelled last week.
MMAJunkie.com got the scoop on the pushed back event. “Jon Jones went back in the gym and just didn’t feel good,” Dana White detailed. “He said his legs were still bothering him and his eye is bothering him. He still banged up from that fight.”
The five round battle at UFC 165 between Jones and Gustafsson was a gruelling affair. While both fighters took their shots, it was Jones that was cut, marked-up, and limping after the battle. Gustafsson became a fan favorite after declared a loser in a fight that many seeing the Swede winning.
