Katja Kankaanpää (10-1-1) has just signed on to extend her stay with the leading women’s only promotion Invicta. The news of the Finnish Invicta Strawweight Champion re-signing was announced today.
“Invicta has given me a chance to compete at a high level and is able to offer me tough fights, so I’m very happy about them renewing my contract,” says Invicta’s reigning strawweight champion.
The three fight contract should lock up her status with the organization for 2015, where the option for the newly created 115 lbs. class in the UFC would remain an option. Invicta indicates that “Killer Bunny’s” first title defense is expected to take place in early 2015.
Kankaanpää (10-1-1) stopped both of her opponents in 2014, including her last bout in dramatic fashion to claim the Invicta FC’s belt. The fifth round finish of the 115-pound title at Invicta FC 8 in September came via D’arce choke finish of American Stephanie Eggink. The 33-year-old Finnish fighter also holds wins over Invicta veterans Juliana Carneiro Lima and Aisling Daly.
“I’m very motivated and I have been training hard towards defending my title many times. There are many girls in our division who want the belt and that makes me work even harder.” says the Team Botnia Punishment fighter.
The 2014 Nordic Women’s fighter of the year is looking to continue her reign at the top. “Train hard and believe in yourselves, but if you come to the same cage with me, you better be ready for war!”
