Play-by-Play

The Dublin crowd is deafening as Smith emerges in a state of Nirvana, as is evidenced by his walkout song, Lake of Fire. The Viking, Troeng emerges to a much heavier tune, looking every bit a stern-faced Nordic raider.
Round 1

The American and the Umeå based fighter touch gloves, and the battle begins.  Troeng eats a leg kick, but takes the center, before fending off a double-leg attempt. Troeng gives Smith a knee to the body, then pushed him to the fence. The left knee of Troeng connects once more to the body of Smith, and as the two clinch, Troeng slips an uppercut through the American’s hands. Troeng in the center, eats two consecutive punches, but pressures Smith back to the fence. Solid knee lands for Smith. A solid left hand lands for Troeng and Smith answers with a leg kick. Smith’s punches are wild and looping, and when he attempts another kick, Troeng catches the leg and tosses him to the mat. Smith escapes and attempts to take Troeng down, but Troeng instead pushes Smith to the cage instead. Troeng cuts the corner and throws a front kick to the body of Smith. A right and a left both glance off Troeng ineffectually and he slips a perfectly timed uppercut up the middle as Smith tries to surge forward.

Viking Score Card: 10-9, Troeng.

Round 2

Smith opens the round with a nice right hand, but Troeng pieces together a series of jabs which lead to a beautiful double-leg. Troeng has Smith in the center of the cage, and passes once, twice, and into mount, but Smith escapes out the back door, and hits the switch once more to pressure his way into the top position in side control. Troeng shrimp escapes and gets him in guard, but Smith is active and manages a pass into half guard. Solid pressure from the American as he starts to lay on punches to the ear of the Ultimate Fighter 17 alumni. Troeng makes his way to the fence in a sitting position, and Smith mounts his lap, but Troeng stands, and makes his way back to the center of the cage. Troeng lets the jabs fly, then shoots for a smooth takedown, but Smith locks in a tight arm-in guillotine. Trevor Smith is smiling on the stool, while the Swede is hitching deep breaths.

Viking Score Card: 10-9, Smith.

Round 3

A final touch of gloves and Smith throws a leg kick. The Swede clinches, then searches for a takedown, but Smith takes him to the fence and shoots a takedown of his own. Troeng stuffs it, and works his way around to take the back. The Swede is looking for hooks when Troeng transitions and finds his way on top. Smith is in the Swede’s half guard and dropping elbows. Smith pins Troeng’s right arm and slides into three-quarter mount, but Troeng squeezes out and gives up his back. Trevor Smith dropping shots on Troeng, until the Swede stands, but Smith drops for a modified Fireman’s Carry  roll and finds himself once more in the top position, dropping elbows. Smith is in a shallow attempt at half-guard, then takes the back. Troeng attempts to escape, but Smith is all over him, where he ends the round.
